Today Rae Steinbach is joining us to talk about....

How Your Furry Friend Might Impact Your Apartment Insurance Policy

Now before we dive into this fab guest post, it is geared more towards our American furriends, although we're sure renters around the wurld will pick up some good tips too!

How Your Furry Friend Might Impact Your Apartment Insurance Policy

Renters insurance covers a lot more than many people realize. Along with covering your personal property, it can also help you financially if you’re liable for damage to someone else’s property, if you need to pay someone else’s medical bills, or if items covered under your plan are stolen. You’re even covered if the items were with you on vacation when they were stolen. All this, at an average cost of merely $12/month.

That said, it’s also important to understand how insurance works and what it won’t cover. You’ll be much more likely to thoroughly protect yourself and your belongings if you know what your coverage doesn’t apply to.

Will Renters Insurance Cover My Pet?

For example, new renters may wonder if their pet is covered under an insurance plan. The simple answer is “no.” Pets do not qualify as the kind of personal property a renters insurance plan would typically cover. Some plans may include pet liability if you’re worried about your little buddy damaging the apartment, but that doesn’t help if your pet is harmed or becomes ill. Depending on certain key factors, like the breed of dog and steps you took to keep it away from guests, your plan may also help if your pet hurts another person in your apartment.

This doesn’t mean there’s no action you can take to insure your pet. Pet insurance is simply an entirely different category of product than renters insurance.

Finding Affordable Pet Insurance

Although the average cost of pet insurance is higher than that of renters insurance, it’s still relatively inexpensive when compared to the benefits it offers. The average pet owner spends somewhere between $30 and $50 a month on their plan.

Of course, this is another instance in which several factors affect the cost. Some animals are more prone to injury than others. In certain areas, average veterinarian costs are higher than in others. The specific breed of your pet can also affect how much you spend on insurance. That said, you probably can’t keep your pet safe all the time. Having this form of insurance can be well-worth the cost if your pet is ever harmed.

Renters insurance is an extremely versatile product. Don’t make the mistake of assuming it only covers personal belongings, as it can be extremely helpful in a wide range of situations. However, you also want to avoid the mistake of assuming renters insurance covers a pet. While it can protect you if your pet damages your apartment or harms another person, you’ll need an additional plan to help out if they ever get hurt or sick.

Many thanks to Rae Steinbach fur sending us today's post, and fur explaining the different types of policies needed to keep mew and your furry furriends covered in any eventuality, which is invaluable if mew're a furst time renter and/or a furst time pet pawrent.

Always do your research and compare lots of companies, so mew get exactly the right thing fur your needs, and if mew find it all too confusing, ask an expert, get someone to explain effurything to mew and neffur feel embarrassed about asking questions if mew're unsure about anything.

We'll be back on the morrow with the next chapter in our latest, spine-tingling adventure, The Clockwurk Labyrinth, so hope mew can join us then to catch up on the action and find out what the fluff is going to happen next!
