Chapter Four
A.I. Assistance
Vera 5.0 scanned the kitten with a
blue light beam. "Don't move," she instructed. A full minute went by, and Melvyn
stood still, hardly daring to breathe.
"Scan
complete," Vera announced. "And do you want to hear the good news?"
The kitten
nodded.
"You are a
genetic match for Commander Basil; therefore, I don't have to eradicate you
with massive amounts of prejudice from the bunker. Isn't that nice?"
"Groovy!"
Melvyn replied with a gulp. "I'm feeling really super blessed about that!"
"Excellent,"
replied the A.I. "Now, what are you doing here? What are those robotic
monstrosities trying to get in the main bunker door? And how did you even get
here?"
Melvyn gulped
as the Control Room burst into life, and he said. "I'm on the run from those
Purrminators outside. They are trying to kill me!"
"Why?"
"Because,
apparently, I'm special," was all Melvyn could come up with in the moment.
"Special. How?"
"Erm.." Melvyn
faltered. “Apparently…erm… I have a great power or magic within me, and there
are those who would like to harness it for themselves."
"So why are
those robots trying to kill you?"
"Oh, that's
another fraction who want me dead because…" he faltered. "I was told that I am
the saviour of the world…"
"Let me get
this straight," Vera said. "There's one party who wants your powers and
another party who wants you dead?"
"Pretty much,"
Melvyn sniffled. "It's no fun being me!"
"No fun at
all," Vera said, adding very matter-of-factly. "And I certainly wouldn't
want to be you either, as your probability of surviving today is less than one
percent."
"WOW!" Melvyn
sighed heavily. "Looks like I'm doomed then. Sucks to be me!"
"Not
necessarily," Vera continued. "Let me do a few calculations…"
Melvyn pushed
the chair back to the Comms Desk and climbed on it. He tapped furiously on the
keyboard as Vera ran his survival probabilities again.
The hard drive was old, and Melvyn bit his bottom lip to quell the creeping dread filling his soul as he waited for the information he needed, which he hoped was still stored in the memory of the ancient computer.
"Good news,"
Vera announced rather cheerily. "There is a way to up today's survival percentage
to approximately eighteen percent overall."
"So, how is that
going to work?" Melvyn asked.
"Firstly, finish
your search and then I'll explain," Vera replied. "And
don't take too long, as those Purrminators are going to breach the bunker door
very soon. It's not that I want to worry you unnecessarily, but you've got about five
minutes tops!"
The kitten
gulped and tapped his claws on the desk in acute anxiety as the old hard drive whirred and whirred and whirred.
"Four minutes
until bunker breach," Vera added in a cheery tone. "While we're waiting, if
you go in the drawer to your left.
Melvyn leaned down and yanked the drawer. It screeched in protest, and the rusty runners did not want to glide open. But it yielded on the third attempt.
"Do you see a
small black box with Vera stamped on it?"
He scrambled
off the chair and looked through the items in the drawer. "Got it!"
"Super," she said.
"Now place it on the desk, and I'll download myself to it."
Melvyn looked a
little bewildered.
"Don't worry," Vera said. "Your chances of survival are exponentially increased if I accompany you today. Now, quickly get that information stored in your brain that's just popped up on the screen, and I'll just make myself super transportable."
A swirling golden cloud materialised out of thin air; it spiralled around the Control Room twice at speed and then dove towards the black box on the desk, vanishing inside. The box jumped and beeped several times, and a small blue light on the top in the middle of the letter 'A' began to blink slowly.
"Ugghhhh!" Vera shuddered, her voice now coming from the little black box. "You know that was so unpleasant. But don't panic; I'll be fine in just a moment while I assimilate to being in this tiny box."
"So weird," Melvyn mumbled as he shook his head to clear his mind and turned his attention back to the monitor, seeing exactly what he'd been looking for. He read the page, closed his eyes and committed it to memory. "Ok, all good. I've got what I need." He quickly pushed the power button under the desk, and the screen went black.
"Perfect timing," Vera replied rather cheerily. "I might suggest that you head through to the Conference Room and close the door, as the Purrminators have, in all actuality, breached the bunker."
Melvyn snatched
the now highly portable Vera 5.0 off the desk, ran across the Control Room, into the Conference Room, and hit the door close button.
He looked around, frantically searching for a way out, but he saw none, and in that moment, he felt his entire world tilt sideways. "It's a dead end!" he wailed in utter despair.

ReplyDeleteBasil. You Need to at least reserve your name on Blue Sky. I see a Bionic Basil who is a dog but you can park your B Team there as a similar name.
