Chapter Twelve
The
Awakening
The battlefield was chaos. The M Unit fought
valiantly, but the necromancers’ army seemed endless. The Purrminators kept
coming, their mechanical forms gleaming in the dim, unnatural light of the
broken timeline. The necromancers stood at the edge of the fray, their dark
chants fuelling the onslaught.
Melvyn pressed himself against the shattered hull of a nearby building, his breathing ragged. His paws trembled as he tried to make sense of the chaos around him. He had never felt so helpless and now severely regretted his decision to enter the fray. Blaster fire roared in every direction and looked like a multi-colour laser show, but not in a fun way.
Shadow darted overhead, the blaster on
automatic fire as he tried to keep the enemy at bay and Melvyn safe. Smoke
disappeared and reappeared like a spectre, cutting down enemies with ruthless
efficiency. Even Ice, usually so unflappable, was beginning to show signs of
strain, his icy blasts growing weaker with each strike.
But the enemy kept coming.
The M Unit’s ship was only metres away, glowing
faintly amidst the rubble, but the necromancers had fortified their position.
Every time one of the M Unit made a move to advance, more hidden Purrminators
surged out of the mangled ruins and detritus littering the area, forcing them back.
Melvyn’s ears twitched as he heard Bomber shout
over the chaos, his voice a mix of frustration and determination. “We’re
getting pinned down! Ice, give me cover fire—Havoc, clear the flank!”
“I’m trying!” Ice snapped, hurling a shard of
ice that barely grazed its target. “But there are too many of them!”
Melvyn’s chest tightened as a familiar sense of
dread washed over him. This wasn’t just a battle—it was a massacre. No matter
how hard they fought, the M Unit couldn’t hold out forever. And then, as he
glanced towards the necromancers, he saw it: the faint shimmer of a spell
forming in their hands, a sickly green light growing brighter with every
second.
They were about to unleash something
catastrophic.
Shadow stood over Melvyn and kept firing at
anything that moved. “Bomber!” he yelled. “I need help over here!”
A Purrminator erupted from the debris, slamming
into Shadow, knocking him to the ground and dragging him away with its gleaming
claws, leaving Melvyn alone. Its jaws opened wide, revealing a set of gnashers
that Jaws would have swum away from as Shadow tried to fight back.
“NOOOOOOOO!” Melvyn screamed, his voice echoing
over the chaos as he saw the lethal killing machine sideswipe Shadow, about to
kill him. His heart pounded in his chest as a surge of heat bloomed deep within
him, a feeling both terrifying and exhilarating. It was as though a storm had
been building inside him all along, and now it was ready to break free.
Before he could think, before he could even stop
himself, the power surged forward.
A blinding light erupted from Melvyn’s small
frame, flooding the battlefield with a golden glow that burned brighter than
the sun. His paws lifted off the ground, his body trembling with the force of
the magic coursing through him. Vera’s voice echoed faintly in his mind,
panicked but distant. “Melvyn, no! It’s too much power—you’re not ready!”
But there was no stopping it now. The intensely bright light expanded outward, a shockwave of raw magical energy that slammed into the necromancers and their army like a tidal wave. On contact, the Purrminators crumbled to ash, their metallic forms disintegrating instantly. The necromancers screamed, their dark magic unravelled by the sheer force of Melvyn’s power. With a violent shudder, the ground cracked and split apart, the earth groaning under the immense pressure of surging energy. Dust and debris filled the air.
And then, as quickly as it had begun, it was
over.
The battlefield fell silent, the oppressive
weight of the necromancers’ magic gone. Stillness hung in the air; the
Purrminators were gone, leaving only glittering ash scattered across the derelict
ground. The necromancers themselves had vanished, their dark forms consumed by
the light.
Melvyn collapsed to the ground, his body
utterly spent. His fur was singed, his breathing shallow, and his paws felt as
though they’d been dipped in fire. He tried to move, but his limbs refused to
obey. The power that had surged through him was gone, leaving him drained and
vulnerable.
“Melvyn!” Bomber’s voice was the first to cut
through the silence as he jumped over the debris, panic lacing his usually gruff
tone. The burly leader of the M Unit sprinted across the battlefield, his sharp
eyes scanning the wreckage for any remaining threats.
Melvyn tried to respond, but all that came out
was a weak meow. His vision blurred, the edges of the world growing dim.
But the danger wasn’t over yet.
From the shadows of the rubble, a single figure
emerged—a Purrminator, its metal body badly damaged but still functional. Its
glowing red eyes locked onto Melvyn, and with a mechanical growl, it advanced.
“Target: Melvyn,” it intoned, its voice cold
and mechanical. “Objective: Purrminate.”
Melvyn’s heart sank. He couldn’t move, couldn’t
fight. The power he had unleashed had saved them all, but now it had left him defenceless.
The Purrminator raised a gleaming claw, its
metallic joints whirring ominously as it dragged itself across the wreckage.
Melvyn closed his eyes, bracing himself for the inevitable. Shadow tried to crawl towards
the defenceless kitten, prone in the dirt.
The evil killing machine was relentless, gaining momentum and speed over the jagged, debris-strewn ground.
Melvyn tracked the robot, his eyes growing
wider with terror by the second. If he had screamed, other dimensions would
have heard him.
Shadow tried to stand up, but he was stuck to
the floor. “BOMBER!” he shouted desperately.
And then, with a deafening clang, the
Purrminator was knocked off its mangled legs.
Bomber stood over Melvyn, his powerful frame
blocking the kitten from harm. His claws were extended as he gripped his weapon
of choice, and his eyes burned with fury.
“You’re not touching him,” Bomber
growled, his voice low and dangerous.
The Purrminator lunged, but Bomber was faster. With a swift, brutal strike, he drove his laser sword into the machine’s chest, frying its core in one fluid motion. The Purrminator shuddered, sparks flying from its body before collapsing into a lifeless heap, its malevolent glowing red eyes extinguished forever.
Bomber didn’t wait to see if it would rise
again. He scooped Melvyn up in his massive paws, holding him close as he turned
back towards the ship. The rest of the M Unit was already regrouping, their
expressions a mix of relief and exhaustion.
Bomber carried Melvyn aboard the ship, laying
him gently on a padded bench. “Hang in there,
kid,” Bomber muttered, his usual gruffness softening. “You did good. Real
good.”
Nitro and Viper dragged Shadow through the ship’s
door and sat him on the nearest seat. Followed by Ice, Titan, Nitro and smoke.
“That fluffing Purrminator deactivated my armour,”
Shadow snarled, still unable to move. “It was like I was glued to the ground!”
“What?” Titan asked. “They know how to disable our armour, oh fluff no, I’ll write some new code. I’m not having that!” Then added. “I’ll just get the diag tool and recalibrate your armour, dude. Don't move; I'll be right back.”
“Is he okay?” Shadow asked as Bomber sat
beside him.
“He’ll live,” Bomber said, though his voice was
tight with concern. “But we need to get him out of here—now. This place
isn’t safe.”
As Smoke and Ice charged toward the cockpit,
another quake hammered the ground, violently shaking the ship. The timeline was
collapsing, and the damage from the battle was too great to repair. They had no choice
but to retreat.
The engines roared to life just as Melvyn’s eyes fluttered open briefly, his voice barely above a whisper. “Did… did we win?”
Bomber gave a small, rare smile. “Yeah, Melvyn.
We won. Now rest.”
The M Unit exchanged tense glances as the ship blasted away from the crumbling timeline. They had escaped. And though the necromancers were gone for now, they all knew this wasn’t the end. The battle was only just beginning.
