Supurr Monday greetings beautiful furiends

We're continuing our crystal journey today, and this week, we've got a lovely gemstone to share as Kelli asked us; what are salt crystal lamps good for?

Crystal of The Week

&

What Are Salt Crystal Lamps Good For?

Salt crystal comes in all shades of orange, pinky, salmony, brown/reddish and white tones.  And they are usually rough-hewn chunks that are bored out inside to create the lamps or tealight holders, although some are shaped as spheres, obelisks, cones and pyramids etc..., and even bowls now. Mew can also get smaller rough-cut stones as in the top right picture below, which mew could place in a bowl or whatever mew have. They are mined in the Himalayas and are around 250 million years old, so purretty old as all things go! MOL

Salt crystal is a friable stone much like selenite, so mew really don't want to wet it; when mew occasionally clean it, use a damp cloth to carefully wipe the outer surface, or use a small brush and give it a little tickle, as they can become dusty.

This is the salt lamp we have at BBHQ, sorry there's no Melvyn modelling alongside it today, he was too busy playing with his new toy! MOL

Ours is a pale salmony tone, although it looks lighter in the picture below and when lit, it casts a really relaxing orangey glow to the room.

Anyhoo, let's jump right in and tell mew a little about the gem lore and reputed benefits surrounding these ameowzing crystal lamps.

Not only are they gorgeous to look at as each one is unique, they supposedly are a supurr addition to your home as they are natural negative ion generators. Now, what does that mean? Well, let us explain like this; mew know when it's been a hot stuffy and humid day and the air feels heavy and cloying, and then along comes a thunder or rainstorm and immediately afterwards it feels so fresh and the air is light, it feels energised and full of oxygen again. Well, salt lamps do the same thing, they create the negative ions just like aftur a rainstorm and energise the air and clear the smog.

They wurk by using the heat generated by either the bulb in the electric lamps or by the flame in candle tealights, and as the salt heats up it attracts the moisture from the air, then as it evaporates the salt emits the negative ions. So the larger the lamp, the more ions mew get.

These ions also purportedly help negate the effects of electromagnetic smog within the home that are created by modern-day living such as; routers, air-con, electrical appliances, fluorescent lighting, TVs, computers, phones, heating,  etc... all of these items/things can drain your natural energy/chi and create positive ions. So by using a salt crystal lamp and introducing negative ions into your home, this aids in balancing the air and surroundings making for a much nicer and energised environment.

Some of the reported benefits we've read about from using salt crystal lamps are:- air purification, reduction in airborne allergens, increased energy and chi, mood-boosting, increased wellbeing, increased mental alertness, better sleep, reduced stress. Obviously, mew would have to determine these claims yourself by introducing a salt crystal lamp into your home.

Originally we bought ours in about 2005, and it is an electric lamp, and it uses a small 5W sewing machine bulb, which are readily available from Amazon or other DIY retailers. We don't have the candle votives at BBHQ as obviously cats and real candles are not a great combination - check out our Cat Hazards post.

We really like our lamp, and whether or not it does any of the supposed claims or benefits, it's a lovely looking lamp to have in your home.

So if mew're looking for a nice crystal to decorate your home with, which apparently has many reputed benefits, this might be one to try, and if mew do, let us know if mew feel better for it as curious minds want to know.

Many thanks for DM'ing us Kelli, and we hope that answered your question.

  2. We used to have a salt crystal pyramid lamp that plugged into a USB port. Mom used it in the Computer lab at work to balance the ionization (too many positive ions). Alas, when we moved back here to Midway to take care of Daddy, she inadvertently left it there. It is amazing how salt crystal lamps can reduce headaches and lethargy. We give these lamps 4 paws up!
