~ Chapter Nine ~

The Broom Cupboard

Mew know sometimes I wonder what The B Team are up to in such a huge bunker, but I never saw this coming!

Humphrey grabbed the device, and we all ran for the door. Dashing along the corridor towards the stairwell, Bomber pushed the door open, and I prayed it wouldn’t creak. Smoke checked the coast was clear and stood with his blaster aimed down the stairs towards Level Three. We hurtled up the curved stairs, and I could hear the frantic scrambling of deathly paws clawing their way upward as fast as they could.

Slamming the door on Level One as Smoke zipped through, I said. “Vera, lock down all the stairwell doors.”

“Affirmative, Commander Basil,” she replied, and I heard the security locks thunk into place.

Once in the Control Room, I saw Melvyn was still in Pandora’s arms. Obviously, he was feeling overwhelmed by the recent revelations. Walking over to them, I lifted him from Pandora and said with as much conviction as I could muster under the current circumstances. “Little dude, mew are safe.” Though inside I was feeling far from safe as I held my nephew tight and turned my attention to the monitors, live streaming carnage on every screen.

The T-Rexs were battering the fluff out of the invisi-dome. A few Red Wing Raptor stragglers had been destroying the village. Luckily I saw no more residents or remains of residents, so word must have spread quickly, and hopefully they’d barricaded themselves in their homes.

I checked the stairwell feed on monitor one and saw dozens of shufflers clawing their way closer and closer to Level One.

“Pandora,” I asked, suddenly having a bit of a revelation. “Can mew cast a warding spell on the door to the stairwell?”

Miss Warts and Mogs stepped forward, as Pandora said. “Yes, why?”

I didn’t need to answer, as Miss Warts said. “Because the zombie cats are being controlled by magic, and we need magic to stop them!”

“Exactly,” I nodded. “That’s why they seem to be getting through our defences. I think the necromancer imbibed, infused or whatever mew want to call it, something into their reanimation.”

“Oh, mew mean that no mortal door or portal shall stop their quest?” Mogs asked.

“That would make sense,” Miss Warts agreed.

I could see Pandora was musing the possibilities and a few seconds she said. “I need some supplies.”

We all looked blankly at her as the entire bunker was locked down. “But there’s nothing on this level that could help in a magical capacity,” I said.

“Oh Basil, mew know that disused broom cupboard next to your office?”

I nodded.

“Well, that’s been my magical apothecary for a while!”

“But mew can’t swing a cat in there, it’s tiny!” I blurted.

She grinned. “Oh, ye of little faith!”

Then I remembered seeing Deezul on Level One a few weeks ago. For those of mew who don’t know Deezul the Badger, he’s in charge of the bunker excavations and the nanobots which created BBHQ, he manages any additional levels or expansions that are needed.

“That’s why I saw Deezul outside my office,” I said. “He’s done something in the broom cupboard, hasn’t he?”

Pandora nodded. “Yes, he very kindly came to my aid and transformed the broom cupboard.”

“Well, what are mew waiting for?” I grinned. “Go get your supplies and take Fudge, Ice and Shadow with mew.”

“We’re coming too!” Miss Warts said, hurrying after them with Mogs right behind her.

I put Melvyn down and gave him a little pat on the head. “Little dude I want mew to stay with Bomber and Smoke, they’ll keep mew safe.”

The two brawny Maine Coons stepped forward, and Smoke picked him up. “Don’t mew worry Melvyn, mew will be fine with us.”

Humphrey had taken over the enormous table in the boardroom, setting up his newly created device. There were several iPaw tablets, a laptop and more wires than mew’d find in a telephone cabinet. “Basil, I’m going to see if I can read the data crystal,” he called.

“Amber and Snowie, mew stay here and watch the monitors,” I instructed as the rest of us headed into the boardroom.

Humphrey pushed the crystal cube into the slot, and a bright beam of white light shot upwards.

“Fantastic!” Humphrey murmured as he plugged in the largest iPaw tablet and began tapping furiously on the screen. “I’m hoping this one will be enough to download the data, but if not, I have backups!”

Parsley and Smooch leaned closer as they watched Humphrey work. Melvyn sat on Smoke’s shoulder as he and Bomber edged nearer.

I realised I was holding my breath as I watched on and let out an enormous sigh. Posie stood next to me, and she whispered. “If anypawdy can make this work, it’s Humphrey, he’s a fluffing genius!”

Smiling at my sister, I said. “Posie, we’d be totally fluffed without him.”

The bright white light morphed through the colour spectrum of the rainbow, getting faster and faster and faster until it suddenly winked out.

“Did it work?” we all said at once.

Humphrey unplugged the iPaw and began tapping on the screen. Mew could have heard a pin drop as we waited for Humphrey to speak. A few seconds later, he said. “There’s good news and bad news.”

“Oh for fluffs sake,” I muttered, adding. “Give us the bad news.”

“Well, it’s not so much bad news,” Humphrey replied. “It’s more a case of we’ve got the data, but it needs decrypting, as it’s in an unknown language.”

Bomber leaned over Humphrey’s shoulder and looked at the screen. “It’s in our homeworld dialect of Meow-darin.”

Smoke edged closer and looked at the screen. “Dude, we can translate this no problem.”

“Just give me a second,” Humphrey said and pushed a button on the edge of the table. A large fifty-inch screen emerged from the centre of the table, and a couple of seconds later the data was transferring to the screen. “There mew go. That should make it easier.”

>^.^<

Pandora opened the door to the broom cupboard and rushed inside. Miss Warts and Mogs, followed by Ice, Shadow and Fudge raced in, and Fudge slammed the door. “Is there a lock, just in case?” he asked.

Pandora waved a paw and a blue light crackled over the door as she said. “It’s locked.”

“Oh, that’s rather nifty,” Fudge said and poked his paw at the crackling blue light. “OW! What the fluff?” He jumped back with lightning reflexes. “That’s rather zappy!”

Mogs said. “Fudge, never touch a warded door, especially one that’s been in place for a while as the magic grows and becomes stronger.”

“I suspect Pandora has it set, so it’s only like a tickle if mew or any of The B team accidentally touches it,” Miss Warts pondered. “I bet if Ice or Shadow touched it, they’d be flung across the room and would smell like burnt fur.”

“Oh, mew know that warding spell?” Pandora asked.

Miss Warts and Mogs nodded. “Yes, we teach it at the academy, but only to our most capable students.”

Ice and Shadow were standing, mouths agape as they took in the room. Even Fudge stuttered as he turned around and saw Pandora’s magical empawrium.

“Pandora, what the fluff?” he gasped.

The room was immense; it was lined floor to ceiling with ornate ebony bookcases, and each shelf was crammed to capacity with all manner of magical tomes, some new and some very, very old. A long ebony counter carved with mystical symbols stood in front of the bookcase on the back wall and placed neatly on top were many bottles of herbs and potions.

A desk sat neatly near the bookcases on the right, and several cabinets filled with crystals, and other mystical items were dotted precisely around the room, leaving the centre clear.

Fudge pointed at the empty space and said. “That’s not really empty, is it?”

Pandora smiled, walked to the centre of the room and waved her paw in the air in a rather complicated manner while muttering something that was indecipherable to those present.

The air shimmered, and a radiant purple glow filled the room. In the next second, amethyst crystals of all shapes and sizes appeared.

There was a collective gasp as the purple light faded, leaving Pandora standing in the middle of an amethyst crystal circle.

Miss Warts stepped closer and then noticed the silver circle set into the stone floor surrounding the amethysts. Peering around one of the huge crystals, being careful not to step over the silver ring, she spied a pentagram whose points reached the outer circle between the amethysts.

She gasped. “Pandora, this is utterly magnificent, and I take it the pentagram is aligned?”

Pandora nodded. “Everything is aligned as per the Magisterium of Magic,” she said in her odd, little foreign accent.

“It’s very impressive. Perhaps mew can show us more once this is over?” Mogs asked.

“Of course, it would be my pleasure,” Pandora answered as she reached down and picked up a wooden box, that had materialised out of thin air.

“Is that what we need to ward the stairwell?” Ice asked.

“Yes,” Pandora replied, just as Amber’s voice crackled over the comms unit.

“The shufflers are trying to batter the stairwell door down, mew need to hurry before they break through!”
