Fluff and Brimstone
Astrid’s voice was clear and
precise as she spoke to Commander Basil via the headset. “Sorry to interrupt the reunion, Commander, but the Purrminators have breached the garden. There are
three, and they are about to attack from the front of the property.”
“Thank you Astrid,” Basil replied. “Are there any weapons onboard
the T.T.T.B. which you can deploy to stop them?”
“No, commander, as Smooch and Parsley were doing a weapons inventory
the other day and they removed some of the stuff that would have been perfect
for this scenario,” Astrid said. “But I’ll check with Astrid 7.0 and Dave.”
“Oh fluff me!” Basil groaned, he then turned to Bomber. “The
Purrminators are in the front garden. Astrid has no weapons suitable for eradicating
them, but she’s just checking with Astrid 7.0.”
Bomber grimaced and looked at Melvyn, still clinging to
Commander Basil. “What about Melvyn?”
“I’m going to put him in my T.T.T.B. with Astrid,” Basil
replied as he ran across the manicured lawn.
Melvyn’s eyes were wide with panic, and Vera 5.0, who was
still dangling from his small backpack, said rapidly. “Commander Basil, I am
Vera 5.0 from the future. I will stay with Melvyn.”
Ushering Melvyn into the T.T.T.B., Commander Basil said. “Thank you Vera, and Astrid,
if it all goes to fluff, get Melvyn out of here.”
Melvyn looked at his uncle, the cat he had been seeking for weeks and said. “Don’t leave me!”
“Melvyn, we need to fight, and I can’t risk you, so please stay
here. I’ll be back, I promise,” Basil winced inwardly. He hated to make
promises he might not be able to keep, but he had no choice. Then he added, “Vera
will be with you, so you’ll be fine, little dude.” He sealed the door and
turned to Bomber, who yelled. “Duck!”
Basil dived to the ground and rolled over several times
just as one of the metallic killing machines landed right where he was standing.
It turned its gleaming red eyes to Bomber and pounced, knocking the huge Maine
Coon to the ground.
Smoke, Shadow and Ice, along with Titan, Havoc, Viper and Nitro, closed ranks and opened fire as the other Purrminators charged.
“FLUFF ME!” Commander Basil yelled as he saw the monstrous cyborg
cats for the first time and aimed his Uzi at the nearest one, the bullets riddling
the Purrminator like Swiss cheese, but that didn’t stop it for a second. Basil jumped
to the side as the shiny cyborg jumped at him, and it slammed into a tree.
Blaster fire sounded as The M Unit unleashed hell, while
Bomber, still under the metallic beast that was trying to kill him with
massive amounts of prejudice, and he was only just managing to evade its deadly
strikes. He grabbed the laser sword from its holster strapped to his leg and activated
it. The lethal glowing light shot up straight through the Purrminator’s chest,
and then Bomber wrenched the sword backwards and overhead, slicing the Purrminator
in two. The smell of scorched metal and fried circuits leached into the air as
it fell to the side and twitched with a slow mechanical whine before the glow
in its eyes dimmed.
Commander Basil ran around the back of the T.T.T.B.S, reaching into his flak jacket, fumbling around in his pockets for one of Humphrey’s devices as the second Purrminator chased him.
Ice saw Commander Basil being pursued by one of the
Purrminators and yelled above the whining noise of repeated blaster fire. “Commander
Basil’s in trouble. I’m going to help!”
“Me too!” Shadow shouted, and the two Maine Coons hurtled after
the Purrminator.
Bomber jumped to his paws and followed, with Smoke on his
heels. The air was tinged with the tang of burning laser fire and cordite.
Basil ran straight towards a wire chicken coop at the
bottom of the garden. He swerved at the last second, sliding along the grass on
his side, making the Purrminator turn too sharply. The cyborg crashed into the chicken
coop, smashing the structure and fence. It rolled over and over, and the wire
mesh wrapped around its body, trapping it for vital seconds as Ice, Shadow, Smoke, and Bomber appeared.
Havoc, Viper, Nitro and Titan were blasting the fluff out of the third Purrminator. Its right front leg buckled and then snapped off. Its
rear left leg collapsed, and the metallic menace fell to the ground, but it
still clawed across the lawn relentlessly towards the cat commandos.
Ice and Shadow peppered the second Purrminator with blaster
fire as it fought free of the metal mesh. Commander Basil finally found what he
was looking for in his flak jacket and pulled out a small gun. He flicked it on and pointed, but the Purrminator burst free, its deadly razor claws outstretched like chrome daggers, and collided with Ice and Shadow. The two cats screamed
in pain as they fell, and the Purrminator charged towards Bomber and Smoke.
There was no hesitation. Commander Basil pulled the trigger,
and in the next second, the hulking cyborg cat shrank to the size of a pea with
a high-pitched popping sound. Picking up a rockery stone from the garden border,
he smashed the Purrminator to smithereens.
Bomber slid next to Shadow and Ice, who were flat out on
the lawn, their body armour slashed to ribbons and blood pouring everywhere. “NO!
NO! NO!” he shouted. Smoke ripped off his armoured backpack and pulled out a med kit as he said. “Dudes, stay calm. We can fix this.” He winced as he saw
the extent of the injuries, but kept calm and carried on patching up his squadmates.
Commander Basil ran back to the T.T.T.B.s and fired at the
last remaining Purrminator, which also shrank to the size of a pea. Nitro,
Havoc, Titan and Viper looked stunned as Basil walked up to the now miniaturised
and severely disabled tiny cyborg with the same rock and crushed it with one
blow. “Just die, you cyborg muther fluffer!” Basil growled.
“Commander Basil, I don’t mean to interrupt, but,” Astrid
said. “There’s an interdimensional portal opening in the meadow at the back of
the garden. We need to leave, NOW!”
Melvyn poked his head out of the T.T.T.B door, the amulet
around his neck glowing a vivid purple. He’d watched the battle on the monitors
inside and knew that the Purrminators had been defeated.
Commander Basil saw Melvyn peeking out, but turned to the
four Maine Coons and said abruptly. “Get your squad. Two are badly injured. Bring them
to my T.T.T.B.” As he headed towards Melvyn.
Bomber and Smoke carried Shadow as Havoc and Titan lifted
Ice.
“In here quick,” Basil instructed, as he held Melvyn in one
arm and the door open with the other. “Astrid says there’s a portal opening about fifty
metres away. We need to go.”
Bomber looked at his brother, Shadow, whose pulse was
getting thready and weak as he bled out. “He doesn’t have long,” he said in
utter distress. “We’ve got no med bay!”
“Astrid, get the Med Droids up here now,” Commander Basil ordered, then quickly passed Melvyn to Smoke, and he raced to the cupboard just off the bridge
to fetch blankets and a med kit he had stashed there for emergencies.
Melvyn squirmed out of Smokes’ grasp and ran to Shadow and Ice,
glancing at Bomber and said. “Let me help.”
Bomber and the rest of the M Unit looked confused, as the
magical amulet around Melvyn’s neck began to glow a vivid green as he grasped it
in his paw. “I think I can help them.”
He knelt between the dying cats and placed his paws on theirs.
Closing his eyes, he focused all his magical energy, intent and will into
the brave commandos. The amulet crackled and sparkled as a gentle flow of green
mist swirled out of Melvyn’s paws and into the fading cats on either side of
him. His little face tightened, his jaw clenched as, by sheer force of will, he
pushed the healing magic into the Maine Coons.
Bomber and the entire M Unit gasped as they watched the bleeding stop and the deep lacerations partially close. Melvyn roared with the effort as he used every ounce of strength left in him to save the cats.
Basil slid to a stop as the green mist retreated, and Melvyn
slumped over. He dropped the blankets and picked Melvyn up; he was out cold.
Bomber felt Shadows pulse. “It’s getting stronger.” He then
checked Ice’s. “Ice too. Melvyn brought them back from the brink!”
“What the fluff!” Basil breathed in shock as he looked at
his unconscious nephew in his arms.
Smoke and Bomber quickly wrapped their squadmates in the
blankets as the rest of the M Unit breathed a sigh of relief, and then the Med Droids
appeared on the bridge and began scanning Shadow and Ice to determine the
extent of their remaining injuries.
Breaking the silence, Astrid’s voice sounded from the overhead comms. “The portal is almost at its zenith. We have only minutes before whatever is on the side will be able to come through.”
