Chapter Four

A.I. Assistance

Vera 5.0 scanned the kitten with a blue light beam. "Don't move," she instructed. A full minute went by, and Melvyn stood still, hardly daring to breathe.

"Scan complete," Vera announced. "And do you want to hear the good news?"

The kitten nodded.

"You are a genetic match for Commander Basil; therefore, I don't have to eradicate you with massive amounts of prejudice from the bunker. Isn't that nice?"

"Groovy!" Melvyn replied with a gulp. "I'm feeling really super blessed about that!"

"Excellent," replied the A.I. "Now, what are you doing here? What are those robotic monstrosities trying to get in the main bunker door? And how did you even get here?"

Melvyn gulped as the Control Room burst into life, and he said. "I'm on the run from those Purrminators outside. They are trying to kill me!"

"Why?"

"Because, apparently, I'm special," was all Melvyn could come up with in the moment.

"Special. How?"

"Erm.." Melvyn faltered. “Apparently…erm… I have a great power or magic within me, and there are those who would like to harness it for themselves."

"So why are those robots trying to kill you?"

"Oh, that's another fraction who want me dead because…" he faltered. "I was told that I am the saviour of the world…"

"Let me get this straight," Vera said. "There's one party who wants your powers and another party who wants you dead?"

"Pretty much," Melvyn sniffled. "It's no fun being me!"

"No fun at all," Vera said, adding very matter-of-factly. "And I certainly wouldn't want to be you either, as your probability of surviving today is less than one percent."

"WOW!" Melvyn sighed heavily. "Looks like I'm doomed then. Sucks to be me!"

"Not necessarily," Vera continued. "Let me do a few calculations…"

Melvyn pushed the chair back to the Comms Desk and climbed on it. He tapped furiously on the keyboard as Vera ran his survival probabilities again.

The hard drive was old, and Melvyn bit his bottom lip to quell the creeping dread filling his soul as he waited for the information he needed, which he hoped was still stored in the memory of the ancient computer.

"Good news," Vera announced rather cheerily. "There is a way to up today's survival percentage to approximately eighteen percent overall."

"So, how is that going to work?" Melvyn asked.

"Firstly, finish your search and then I'll explain," Vera replied. "And don't take too long, as those Purrminators are going to breach the bunker door very soon. It's not that I want to worry you unnecessarily, but you've got about five minutes tops!"

The kitten gulped and tapped his claws on the desk in acute anxiety as the old hard drive whirred and whirred and whirred.

"Four minutes until bunker breach," Vera added in a cheery tone. "While we're waiting, if you go in the drawer to your left.

Melvyn leaned down and yanked the drawer. It screeched in protest, and the rusty runners did not want to glide open. But it yielded on the third attempt.

"Do you see a small black box with Vera stamped on it?"

He scrambled off the chair and looked through the items in the drawer. "Got it!"

"Super," she said. "Now place it on the desk, and I'll download myself to it."

Melvyn looked a little bewildered.

"Don't worry," Vera said. "Your chances of survival are exponentially increased if I accompany you today. Now, quickly get that information stored in your brain that's just popped up on the screen, and I'll just make myself super transportable."

A swirling golden cloud materialised out of thin air; it spiralled around the Control Room twice at speed and then dove towards the black box on the desk, vanishing inside. The box jumped and beeped several times, and a small blue light on the top in the middle of the letter 'A' began to blink slowly.

"Ugghhhh!" Vera shuddered, her voice now coming from the little black box. "You know that was so unpleasant. But don't panic; I'll be fine in just a moment while I assimilate to being in this tiny box."

"So weird," Melvyn mumbled as he shook his head to clear his mind and turned his attention back to the monitor, seeing exactly what he'd been looking for. He read the page, closed his eyes and committed it to memory. "Ok, all good. I've got what I need." He quickly pushed the power button under the desk, and the screen went black.

"Perfect timing," Vera replied rather cheerily. "I might suggest that you head through to the Conference Room and close the door, as the Purrminators have, in all actuality, breached the bunker."

Melvyn snatched the now highly portable Vera 5.0 off the desk, ran across the Control Room, into the Conference Room, and hit the door close button.

He looked around, frantically searching for a way out, but he saw none, and in that moment, he felt his entire world tilt sideways. "It's a dead end!" he wailed in utter despair.

Chapter Three

Is Anypawdy There?

The kitten thrust a paw forward, karate-chopping the droid in the face. It fell over with a clatter and lay inert on the dusty floor.

“Fluff me!” He whimpered, his severely frazzled nerves almost burning out as he took a single step back to inspect the thing at a safer distance.

Relief overwhelmed him as he recognised its identity; Kitty Droid Seven, Level Eleven. And then he let out a nervous chuckle as his horrifically frayed nerves began to knit back together, strand by strand.

He stepped silently around the droid and, using his claws, cut his way through the gossamer veil, blocking the way forward.

After what seemed like an eternity, but in reality was only a couple of minutes, the kitten found the door he was looking for. Typing in a code on the dusty keypad, he prayed to any god that was listening that this code, the only code he had, would work. Soft beeping sounds emitted with each tap, and then the door swooshed open.

Emergency lights pinged on, casting a soft blue light around the circular Control Room, and for the second time in the last minute, he let the feelings of relief flood through him.

Entering the fabled BBHQ bunker Control Room, the door swooshed closed, and he headed for Snowie’s Comms Desk. It was covered in dust and cobwebs, and he batted them away, revealing the keyboard and a headset. The computer monitor harboured a rather large spider and a web that was so thick it must have taken years to perfect, but he didn’t have time to waste and promptly flicked the spider off the monitor and scraped the thick web away, flicking it to the floor.

“Okay…” he mumbled as he searched for the on button. “It’s got to be here somewhere!”

His paw glided over the desk, then the monitor surround but there was nothing. Taking a deep breath and squeezing his eyes shut, he tried to recall the blueprint for the Control Room, and as the images flicked through his mind like a photo reel on nitrous, he found it and chuckled. “Oh, Snowie, when I finally meet you, I’m going to say; it’s under the desk on the right side, just out of reach!”

Pressing the button, he mentally willed the computer to boot up. There was still power in the bunker, but would it be enough, or was it just for emergency lighting and door functions? He was about to find out.

The kitten reached a slow count of fifteen when the hard drive whirred to life. “Thank fluff for that!” he said through a long exhale.

It took another five minutes for the screen and keyboard to light up, and he sat back in the chair and waited until a passcode prompt appeared on the screen and typed in Ninety-Echo-Delta-Six, as he couldn’t use the built-in paw print reader. The computer whirred noisily again, and the kitten stared at the screen. Finally, a picture of all The B Team displayed on the screen, showing them armed to the teeth with more guns than the military, and the kitten beamed, feeling happiness surge forward and fill his soul, which had felt barren and lonely for so long.

Tears unexpectedly streamed down his cheeks as his paw reached out to the tabby cat in the middle of the picture. “Great Uncle Basil!” he choked the words out as his little white paw touched the screen, connecting with the tabby’s face. “Where are you?”

“Unauthorised access to Comms Desk Computer,” a disembodied voice said.

The kitten fell off the chair in shock, and the chair rolled into the circular desk behind him with a bang.

“Who’s that?” he asked as he slid under the desk.

“I am Vera 5.0,” the voice said. “I am the last incarnation of the BBHQ Bunker A.I., and who are you?”

The kitten scrambled to his paws, cleared his throat, and said in a shaky voice. “I am Melvyn, and I need to find Great Uncle Basil stat!”

Chapter Two

Pitch Black

In the tense and highly charged seconds that followed, the kitten screamed as the mighty door motor whined. The pitch and hum increased as it fought against the years of neglect. A thick, greasy grey smoke billowed as the dust and cobwebs burnt with an acrid tang mixed with the stench of years-old oil at the ceaseless friction.

The immobilised kitten stood rooted to the spot, feeling a flood of terror coursing through his tiny body, rendering him unable to move. The kitten resigned himself to his fate; Bast would meet him at the Rainbow Realm, and he would be reunited with his family.

Staring wide-eyed, he watched in horror as the glowing, red, malevolent eyes grew bigger and bigger as the thing hurtled towards him. The glinting, snapping jaws and terror claws would be his final memory.

The puthering grey smoke filled the doorway like a toxic cloud, and in the next moment, with a Herculean screech, the door motor won, and the massive steel blast doors slammed shut with an almighty banging clatter. Dust flew in all directions, and the cobweb shrouds billowed like angry ghosts.

The kitten almost sprang out of his fur at the unexpected noise and stumbled backwards. Tripping over a dusty crate, he found himself entangled in a sticky web shroud, the silky strands clinging to his fur. The sensation made him shudder, and he let out a series of explosive sneezes that echoed loudly in the silence.

The corridor was ink-black, and he had no clue whether the thing had made it through the door. Sitting motionless in the darkness, trying to listen, but the whooshing sound of his heartbeat red-lining in his ears drowned everything else out.

The air was heavy with the musty smell of neglect and burning oil as he scraped the gauzy white web from his face and whiskers, sneezed again and cautiously peered around the crate. He saw no glowing red eyes, but that was no indicator at all. Those things could shield the glow, rendering them completely undetectable in the dark. He’d made that mistake before, and it had nearly cost him his life.

After a couple of minutes, he scrambled to his still shaking paws and stared at the doorway, his eyes now adjusted to the gloom, and by the luck of Bastet herself, he was alone in the dark.

A monstrous wailing sigh escaped him, and he clamped a paw over his mouth to silence it. After all, he wasn’t certain that nothing else was already in here, as the noise of the door closing was enough to wake the dead in several dimensions.

The kitten pulled at the remaining sticky and now dusty diaphanous webs clinging to him like a face-hugger in the Aliens movie and flicked the sticky mass to the floor.

He continued to watch the sealed entrance, his gaze fixed on it, now able to hear faint growls and scratching sounds as deadly claws viciously attacked the steel outside.

“Not good!” He murmured and edged carefully down the musty corridor, away from the certain death looming just the other side of the steel barrier.

He took a steadying breath and tried to collect his thoughts when he collided with something behind him. Stifling a shriek, he swivelled around and came nose-to-nose with a robot droid.
