Chapter Fourteen

Not The Fluff Again

A cacophony of roaring winds and shimmering light surrounded Melvyn as he, the M-Unit and the ship tumbled through the vortex. The swirling chaos threatened to tear them apart, fragments of timelines and realities flashing by like shattered dreams. One moment they saw green meadows, the next, burning cities and endless voids.

Nitro clung tightly to Melvyn, his huge paws gripping the kitten over his shoulder. Shadow spun ahead, his expression grim as he attempted to steady himself against the twisting forces.

Vera’s disembodied voice echoed through the maelstrom. “Phase shift incomplete… recalculating destination. Anomalous temporal signature detected. Stand by.”

“Stand by?!” Bomber growled. “We’re about to be turned into cosmic confetti!”

Melvyn gritted his teeth, his paws twitching with instinctive flickers of unstable magic. Despite the overwhelming forces pulling them in every direction, he tried to focus. The vortex responded faintly, its chaotic energies briefly stabilising around them.

“Hold on,” Melvyn rasped, his voice barely audible above the deafening storm.

A sudden flash of light engulfed them, and the chaos vanished.

The world snapped back into focus with a jarring impact. Melvyn was yanked from Nitro's grip by an unseen centrifugal force, and he hit the ground hard, the breath knocked from his lungs. Groaning, he rolled onto his side, his fur singed and crackling with residual magical energy.

Nitro landed with feline grace beside him, though he looked battered. Shadow groaned as he sprawled on a patch of uneven concrete.

“Still alive?” Bomber muttered.

“I’ll have to get back to you on that!” Shadow grimaced at his brother.

“Barely.” Havoc coughed as he rolled over and bumped into Viper.

“For fluffs sake!” Viper grizzled. “Could this mission get any more bizarre?”

“Nope!” Ice said. “And I think it’s about to move up a level.”

“Seriously, can’t we just catch our breath for one minute?” Smoke grunted.

Titan glanced around and then checked his Time Phase Scanner. It beeped pathetically and emitted a low droning hum before it went completely silent. He smacked the scanner repeatedly and cursed loudly. “The fluffing tech is on the fritz again!”

Melvyn forced himself to his paws, his body aching from the ordeal. They stood in the middle of what appeared to be BBHQ—but something was amiss.

The bunker was barely intact, and it just felt… off. And the once-familiar courtyard was eerily silent, the trees devoid of leaves, their twisted branches clawing at the sky. The air felt heavy, filled with a metallic tang that made Melvyn’s fur prickle.

Vera’s hologram flickered into view, her form more solid now. Her expression was grim.

“Welcome to BBHQ… Year: 2033,” she announced, her usual cheery tone still absent.

Bomber’s ears perked up. “We made it back?”

Shadow narrowed his eyes. “No. This isn’t right.”

Melvyn’s senses tingled with unease. The sky above was a sickly hue, and strange, flickering distortions rippled across the landscape.

Vera’s voice was grave. “Temporal signature analysis complete. This is not your 2033.”

A chill ran down Melvyn’s spine. “What do you mean, not our 2033?”

“This timeline has been corrupted,” Vera explained. “Temporal echoes indicate the presence of anomalous forces.” Her hologram shimmered. “We are in another divergent reality.”

Bomber’s tail lashed. “Great. Just great. So now what?”

Before anyone could answer, a distant rumble shook the ground. Melvyn’s ears flicked toward the sound, his heart racing.

Out of the shadows emerged a figure cloaked in darkness. Its eyes glowed with an eerie red light, and an aura of malevolence radiated from it.

“Intruders,” the figure hissed. “You do not belong here.”

Bomber drew his laser sword, his stance poised for battle. “We don’t have time for this.”

The figure’s voice was icy. “Time is meaningless here.” It raised a hand, and tendrils of shadow writhed toward them.

Melvyn’s magic flickered, sputtered, and fizzled out. He gritted his teeth, forcing himself to summon what little energy he had left. The air crackled around him as he formed a shimmering shield.

“We need to regroup,” Bomber said urgently. “Fall back!”

Nitro grabbed Melvyn’s arm, dragging him backward as Shadow and Bomber held off the advancing shadows as they retreated.

Vera’s voice echoed in their ears. “Temporal stability deteriorating. You must find a way to escape.”

Melvyn’s mind raced. The figure’s presence was a manifestation of the timeline’s corruption—a living embodiment of the chaos that had ensnared this reality.

“There has to be a way out of this,” he muttered as Nitro picked him up and ran towards to bunker entrance.

As they retreated deeper across the warped landscape, the ground trembled beneath their paws. Fissures spread like jagged scars, and the sky darkened further.

Vera’s voice grew faint. “Warning… imminent temporal collapse…”

Melvyn’s breath caught in his throat. They were running out of time.

The corrupted figure loomed closer, its laughter echoing through the twisted ruins.

“There is no escape,” it taunted. “Your fate is sealed.”

Melvyn’s resolve hardened. We won’t let this timeline consume us, he thought fiercely. And not after we just fell through that rift and survived.

As they reached the crumbling remnants of what had once been the bunker entrance, Vera’s flickering hologram appeared one last time.

“You have to leave now,” she said.

Melvyn met Ice’s gaze. His eyes blazed with determination.

“Then we leave,” he said.

Havoc rasped. “No pressure or anything.” And he pointed towards the damaged ship.

Bomber looked at his once sleek and epically epic ship and let out a slow breath. "That isn't going anywhere again, is it?"

"That's so fluffing typical!" Ice said. "Now there's no way to escape."

The ground trembled violently, and a deafening crack split the air.

Melvyn’s fur stood on end as a vortex of energy spiralled before them. Tendrils of shadow writhed within it, and the corrupted figure emerged once more, its eyes gleaming with malevolent triumph.

“This world will consume you,” it whispered.

In the next second, Astrid, who'd been offline and conspicuously absent since before the telephone box was loaded into the M-Unit's ship, voice rang out. "What the fluff are we doing in this timeline, guys? We need to go now!"

The Time Travelling Telephone Box materialised in front of the bunker entrance just as the vortex exploded outward, and everything went white.

Chapter Thirteen

Shattered Future

A low, metallic groan echoed through the M Unit’s hull as it trembled violently, hurtling through an iridescent swirl of fractured time streams. Melvyn, still slumped on the bench, barely registered the chaos around him. His fur still crackled faintly with residual magic, the aftermath of the uncontrollable surge that had saved them—but at a terrible cost. His limbs felt like lead, his breath shallow and ragged.

“We’re coming in too hot!” Smoke shouted from the cockpit, his paws flying across the controls. Sparks flew as systems failed one by one.

“Brace for impact!” Ice bellowed, gripping the edge of the console.

The ship lurched, careening toward a flickering tear in the time stream. Light fractured around them like shards of broken glass, and then everything went white.

When Melvyn opened his eyes, his vision swam with static. The acrid scent of burnt circuits filled his nose. The M Unit had crash-landed, its hull partially embedded in scorched earth. Alarms blared weakly before fading into eerie silence.

Groaning, he forced himself upright. Pain shot through his body, but he clenched his teeth against it. The rest of the crew were already on their paws, surveying their surroundings.

“Where are we?” Havoc muttered, his voice hoarse.

Titan wiped the soot from his face. His eyes narrowed as she took in the landscape. “BBHQ... or what’s left of it.”

Melvyn’s heart sank. The once-imposing headquarters of the B-Team was now a skeletal ruin, a gaping hole in the earth. Vines choked the crumbling walls, and scorch marks marred the ground. The sky overhead was a sickly crimson swirling with ominous black clouds.

“What in the name of Bast happened here?” Bomber whispered.

Before anyone could answer, a crackling voice interrupted.

“Systems... rebooting...”

They turned towards Melvyn. Vera's black box attached to the side of his backpack with a D-ring. Her metallic frame was dented and scorched, but flickers of light pulsed along her surface. Her A.I. voice was fragmented, and glitching.

“Temporal breach detected... Year: 2035... Error. Catastrophic deviation from Prime Timeline.”

Vera’s holographic form flickered into view, shimmering and disjointed. Her expression was grim.

“We shouldn’t be here,” she warned. “This is a broken world.”

Shadow stepped forward, his jaw clenched. “What do you mean, broken?”

Vera’s image flickered again. “This version of BBHQ fell in the Great Temporal War. All timelines converged and collapsed into chaos.” Her voice grew fainter. “If we stay... we will be erased.”

Melvyn’s fur bristled despite his exhaustion. “This world is dead,” he said, his voice strained.

Before anyone could respond, a low, guttural growl rumbled through the ruins.

Out of the shadows emerged sleek, cybernetic creatures—a hybrid of machine and beast. Their eyes glowed with malevolent blue light, and their bodies gleamed with metallic plating. Razor-sharp claws clicked against the cracked ground.

Vera’s voice trembled. “Temporal Wraiths. Guardians of corrupted timelines. They will not let us leave.”

The largest of the Wraiths snarled, its gaze locking onto Melvyn. In his weakened state, he barely had time to react as it lunged.

Bomber intercepted it, his laser sword flashing. Sparks flew as metal clashed against metal. “Nitro, get Melvyn to cover!” he shouted.

Nitro didn’t need to be told twice. He hauled Melvyn to his paws and half-dragged him toward a cluster of debris.

“Stay with me, little dude,” Nitro urged. “We need you.”

Melvyn’s vision blurred, but he forced himself to focus. His magic flickered at his fingertips, weak and unstable.

“I can’t... control it,” he gasped.

“You don’t have to right now. Just stay alive,” Nitro said grimly.

The battle raged around them. Bomber fought with feral precision, but the Wraiths were relentless, their movements eerily synchronized. For every blow he landed, they countered with brutal efficiency. Ice, Smoke and Shadow fought on one side of Bomber, while Titan, Viper and Havoc were on his other side as they used all their training to thwart the Temporal Wraiths.

Vera’s hologram flickered violently. “Emergency dimensional collapse imminent,” she warned. “Initiating Phase Shift...”

The ground beneath them began to crack, glowing with pulsating energy. The air vibrated with an ominous hum.

Vera’s voice echoed through the chaos. “I can’t hold it... you must choose: stay and fix this timeline... or escape and risk never returning.”

Melvyn’s mind raced. The ground trembled, fissures spreading like jagged scars. The Wraiths circled closer, their eyes gleaming with deadly intent.

With a surge of determination, Melvyn forced himself upright. His voice was hoarse but resolute. “We have to abandon this world now, there is nothing left here for me,” he choked out.

A deafening crack split the air. The ground beneath them gave way, and they were suspended along with the M Units' ship in a vortex of blinding light.

Vera’s words echoed as they were pulled into the void.

“The choice has been made.”

Chapter Twelve

The Awakening

The battlefield was chaos. The M Unit fought valiantly, but the necromancers’ army seemed endless. The Purrminators kept coming, their mechanical forms gleaming in the dim, unnatural light of the broken timeline. The necromancers stood at the edge of the fray, their dark chants fuelling the onslaught.

Melvyn pressed himself against the shattered hull of a nearby building, his breathing ragged. His paws trembled as he tried to make sense of the chaos around him. He had never felt so helpless and now severely regretted his decision to enter the fray. Blaster fire roared in every direction and looked like a multi-colour laser show, but not in a fun way.

Shadow darted overhead, the blaster on automatic fire as he tried to keep the enemy at bay and Melvyn safe. Smoke disappeared and reappeared like a spectre, cutting down enemies with ruthless efficiency. Even Ice, usually so unflappable, was beginning to show signs of strain, his icy blasts growing weaker with each strike.

But the enemy kept coming.

The M Unit’s ship was only metres away, glowing faintly amidst the rubble, but the necromancers had fortified their position. Every time one of the M Unit made a move to advance, more hidden Purrminators surged out of the mangled ruins and detritus littering the area, forcing them back.

Melvyn’s ears twitched as he heard Bomber shout over the chaos, his voice a mix of frustration and determination. “We’re getting pinned down! Ice, give me cover fire—Havoc, clear the flank!

“I’m trying!” Ice snapped, hurling a shard of ice that barely grazed its target. “But there are too many of them!”

Melvyn’s chest tightened as a familiar sense of dread washed over him. This wasn’t just a battle—it was a massacre. No matter how hard they fought, the M Unit couldn’t hold out forever. And then, as he glanced towards the necromancers, he saw it: the faint shimmer of a spell forming in their hands, a sickly green light growing brighter with every second.

They were about to unleash something catastrophic.

Shadow stood over Melvyn and kept firing at anything that moved. “Bomber!” he yelled. “I need help over here!”

A Purrminator erupted from the debris, slamming into Shadow, knocking him to the ground and dragging him away with its gleaming claws, leaving Melvyn alone. Its jaws opened wide, revealing a set of gnashers that Jaws would have swum away from as Shadow tried to fight back.

“NOOOOOOOO!” Melvyn screamed, his voice echoing over the chaos as he saw the lethal killing machine sideswipe Shadow, about to kill him. His heart pounded in his chest as a surge of heat bloomed deep within him, a feeling both terrifying and exhilarating. It was as though a storm had been building inside him all along, and now it was ready to break free.

Before he could think, before he could even stop himself, the power surged forward.

A blinding light erupted from Melvyn’s small frame, flooding the battlefield with a golden glow that burned brighter than the sun. His paws lifted off the ground, his body trembling with the force of the magic coursing through him. Vera’s voice echoed faintly in his mind, panicked but distant. “Melvyn, no! It’s too much power—you’re not ready!

But there was no stopping it now. The intensely bright light expanded outward, a shockwave of raw magical energy that slammed into the necromancers and their army like a tidal wave. On contact, the Purrminators crumbled to ash, their metallic forms disintegrating instantly. The necromancers screamed, their dark magic unravelled by the sheer force of Melvyn’s power. With a violent shudder, the ground cracked and split apart, the earth groaning under the immense pressure of surging energy.  Dust and debris filled the air.

And then, as quickly as it had begun, it was over.

The battlefield fell silent, the oppressive weight of the necromancers’ magic gone. Stillness hung in the air; the Purrminators were gone, leaving only glittering ash scattered across the derelict ground. The necromancers themselves had vanished, their dark forms consumed by the light.

Melvyn collapsed to the ground, his body utterly spent. His fur was singed, his breathing shallow, and his paws felt as though they’d been dipped in fire. He tried to move, but his limbs refused to obey. The power that had surged through him was gone, leaving him drained and vulnerable.

“Melvyn!” Bomber’s voice was the first to cut through the silence as he jumped over the debris, panic lacing his usually gruff tone. The burly leader of the M Unit sprinted across the battlefield, his sharp eyes scanning the wreckage for any remaining threats.

Melvyn tried to respond, but all that came out was a weak meow. His vision blurred, the edges of the world growing dim.

But the danger wasn’t over yet.

From the shadows of the rubble, a single figure emerged—a Purrminator, its metal body badly damaged but still functional. Its glowing red eyes locked onto Melvyn, and with a mechanical growl, it advanced.

“Target: Melvyn,” it intoned, its voice cold and mechanical. “Objective: Purrminate.”

Melvyn’s heart sank. He couldn’t move, couldn’t fight. The power he had unleashed had saved them all, but now it had left him defenceless.

The Purrminator raised a gleaming claw, its metallic joints whirring ominously as it dragged itself across the wreckage. Melvyn closed his eyes, bracing himself for the inevitable. Shadow tried to crawl towards the defenceless kitten, prone in the dirt.

The evil killing machine was relentless, gaining momentum and speed over the jagged, debris-strewn ground.

Melvyn tracked the robot, his eyes growing wider with terror by the second. If he had screamed, other dimensions would have heard him.

Shadow tried to stand up, but he was stuck to the floor. “BOMBER!” he shouted desperately.

And then, with a deafening clang, the Purrminator was knocked off its mangled legs.

Bomber stood over Melvyn, his powerful frame blocking the kitten from harm. His claws were extended as he gripped his weapon of choice, and his eyes burned with fury.

You’re not touching him,” Bomber growled, his voice low and dangerous.

The Purrminator lunged, but Bomber was faster. With a swift, brutal strike, he drove his laser sword into the machine’s chest, frying its core in one fluid motion. The Purrminator shuddered, sparks flying from its body before collapsing into a lifeless heap, its malevolent glowing red eyes extinguished forever.

Bomber didn’t wait to see if it would rise again. He scooped Melvyn up in his massive paws, holding him close as he turned back towards the ship. The rest of the M Unit was already regrouping, their expressions a mix of relief and exhaustion.

Bomber carried Melvyn aboard the ship, laying him gently on a padded bench. “Hang in there, kid,” Bomber muttered, his usual gruffness softening. “You did good. Real good.”

Nitro and Viper dragged Shadow through the ship’s door and sat him on the nearest seat. Followed by Ice, Titan, Nitro and smoke.

“That fluffing Purrminator deactivated my armour,” Shadow snarled, still unable to move. “It was like I was glued to the ground!”

“What?” Titan asked. “They know how to disable our armour, oh fluff no, I’ll write some new code. I’m not having that!” Then added. “I’ll just get the diag tool and recalibrate your armour, dude. Don't move; I'll be right back.”

Is he okay?” Shadow asked as Bomber sat beside him.

“He’ll live,” Bomber said, though his voice was tight with concern. “But we need to get him out of here—now. This place isn’t safe.”

As Smoke and Ice charged toward the cockpit, another quake hammered the ground, violently shaking the ship. The timeline was collapsing, and the damage from the battle was too great to repair. They had no choice but to retreat.

The engines roared to life just as Melvyn’s eyes fluttered open briefly, his voice barely above a whisper. “Did… did we win?”

Bomber gave a small, rare smile. “Yeah, Melvyn. We won. Now rest.”

The M Unit exchanged tense glances as the ship blasted away from the crumbling timeline. They had escaped. And though the necromancers were gone for now, they all knew this wasn’t the end. The battle was only just beginning.
