Guys, this place is so pawesome, there was nothing for miles around apart from us! MOL

JUST HOW WE LIKE IT!

Then nopawdy gets suspicious about a random telephone box appearing out of thin air!

Here's a little bit of info from BBHQ's Historical Travel Guide, Smooch:

Greetings fellow travellers and history lovers!

As we hiked through the hills of Dartmoor, we stumbled upon the Scorhill Stone Circle, a fascinating prehistoric monument that has stood the test of time for over 4,000 years. This ancient site is a must-visit for anypawdy interested in the rich history of the British Isles and offers a glimpse into the lives of our Neolithic and Bronze Age ancestors. The Scorhill Stone Circle is made up of 23 granite stones, which were carefully chosen and transported from the surrounding moorland. It was once thought to have as many as 60 to 70 stones. The stones vary in size from 1.2 to 1.8 meters in height and are arranged in a slightly oval shape, measuring about 27 meters in diameter. Experts believe that the site was built during the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age, which means it dates back to around 2000 BC. The purpose of the Scorhill Stone Circle remains a mystery, although many theories have been put forward. Some archaeologists believe that it was used for religious or spiritual rituals, while others suggest that it was a meeting place for the local community. Another theory is that the stones were used for astronomical observations, as they are aligned with the moon and stars. As we explored the site, we couldn't help but wonder about the people who built it. What did they believe? What was their daily life like? The Scorhill Stone Circle offers a unique window into the past, allowing us to connect with our ancestors and understand their world a little better. Aside from the Scorhill Stone Circle, there are many other interesting ancient sites nearby. The Grey Wethers, for example, is a pair of Bronze Age stone circles about 3 kilometres away from Scorhill. The circles are made up of 39 stones, and are thought to have been used for similar purposes as Scorhill. We may even bip there next week! MOL If mew're interested in castles, mew can also visit the nearby Castle Drogo, a furbulous building built in the early 20th century. Castle Drogo was designed by the renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and is now owned by the National Trust, and it is currently under renovation. Overall, the Scorhill Stone Circle is a fascinating place to visit, offering a glimpse into the ancient history of Dartmoor and the lives of our ancestors. Whether mew're interested in archaeology, spirituality, or simply love exploring the great outdoors, this site is not to be missed.

It was truly tremendous, and the mystical energies were incredible.

Melvyn thought it looked a bit like a really cosy fire pit, and asked if anypawdy had brought marshmallows. I won't tell mew what Smooch's response was! MOL

Here's a little bit of info from BBHQ's Historical Travel Guide, Smooch:

Greetings to all the history aficionados and travel enthusiasts out there!

As we stood amidst the rolling hills and sweeping meadows of Aberdeenshire, we couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder at the Cullerlie Stone Circle. This ancient site, dating back to the Neolithic era, is a testament to the ingenuity and skill of our forebears.

The Cullerlie Stone Circle consists of eight red granite standing stones arranged in a near-perfect circle measuring about 10 meters in diameter. The stones vary in height from approx 1.09 m or 3ft 6" to 1.80m or 5ft 9".

The smaller cairns, forming the inner eight rings, present a fascinating mystery. Viewed from above, they resemble a flower. Each of these cairns is adorned with eleven stones, except for one that curiously holds only nineWas this a result of theft, or a deliberate design choice? The cairns are then filled with another layer of smaller cobbles, adding to the enigma of this ancient site.

It is believed that the Cullerlie Stone Circle was constructed around 3000 BC, a testament to the advanced skills of our ancestors during the late Neolithic period. The stones, probably quarried from nearby outcrops, were transported - most likely - to the site using sledges and rollers, a remarkable engineering feat that continues to inspire wonder today.

Scholars speculate about the Cullerlie Stone Circle's purpose. Some believe it was used for religious or ceremonial purposes, while others think it may have been a meeting place for the local community or a burial ground. Whatever its original function, it is clear that the Cullerlie Stone Circle was an important cultural and social centre for the people who lived in the region thousands of years ago.

The site is well-maintained and easily accessible, with plenty of information available to help visitors understand the significance of this remarkable site. As we stood there, gazing up at the stones and the vast expanse of the surrounding landscape, we couldn't help but feel a deep connection to the people who built the Cullerlie Stone Circle so many centuries ago.

It's been supurr scorchio the last few days, and nasty, humid heat too, that only used to appear around late August, but it's moved its schedule up to torment us! MOL

So as mew can imagine, not much will be happening at BBHQ today, other than lunch and then maybe a snooze next to one of the fans

What a place to visit, it was meautifully breathtaking!  Melvyn set the camera on a timer, but didn't manage to get up on top of the stone with Fudge in time!

Next time, he'll have to set a longer timer! MOL

Mew know how much we love ancient standing stones and stone circles, see our previous trips to:

Here's a little bit of info from BBHQ's Historical Travel Guide, Smooch:

Greetings to all the history aficionados and travel enthusiasts out there!

This week we had the purrleasure of revisiting the Nine Stone Close, or The Grey Ladies, which is a Neolithic/Bronze Age stone circle situated in the western part of Stanton Moor in Derbyshire. This ancient site is a treasure trove of history and is a must-visit for anypawdy who wants to delve deeper into the marvels of the past. The Nine Stone Close is believed to have been constructed between 2000-1600 BC, during the Bronze Age period. The original site consisted of nine standing stones arranged in an oval shape, though only four of those still stand today. The tallest stone stands at approximately 2.2 metres, and the other three are down to 1.90 metres, with a diameter of roughly 13 -14 metres. Although the stones have suffered erosion and damage over time, the site still carries an air of mystery and wonder that transports you back in time. One of the most remarkable features of the Nine Stone Close is its picturesque location. The site is surrounded by stunning rolling hills and lush woodlands, creating a tranquil and serene environment that is perfect for peaceful contemplation. The surrounding scenery is breathtaking and adds to the overall meauty and charm of the place. If mew're in the area, there are several other points of interest that are worth exploring. The Stanton Moor, located nearby, is an excellent location for a hike or a bit of ramble, and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. There is also the famous Arbor Low stone circle, which is not too far away and is another fascinating historic site to explore.
Plus, there are rumours of strange lights being seen in a nearby wood in the early 19th century, and other tales of it being a portal to a land of fairy folk. (We said we thought they were all portals! MOL)
We would highly recommend a visit to the Nine Stone Close if mew're interested in history or just want to experience the majesty of ancient stone circles. The combination of its historical significance and stunning setting makes it a truly unforgettable destination that will leave mew with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

We're off to pawtrol the BBHQ garden, then Smooch is in charge of snoopervising today's lunch, we're having roast chicken, and we must say that we're really looking forward to it! MOL

This afternoon, if it stays sunny, then we'll go back in the garden and snoopervise the P.A. as she's on a mission to get rid of all the random pots, and move all the plants into the borders around the lawn, as she's sick of how long it takes to water everything! MOL

We'll be back in the morning with another supurr fun Colouring with Cats, so join us to get your Oms on, and your Zen Harmonies happening for the week ahead!
