**NATIONAL CRAFTS FOR YOUR SHELTERS DAY** Crafting with Cats ~ How We Made Cute Pots For Our Cat Grass **SEE OUR EPICALLY FUNKY CAT GRASS POTS**

CRAFTING FOR YOUR SHELTERS DAY! @BionicBasil®

Welcome to another

NATIONAL CRAFTS FOR YOUR SHELTERS DAY

It's National Crafting for Your Shelters Day, and we thought we'd do something a bit different.

Mew can use this idea to offer a nommable treat to kitties in shelters, who may be in need of a little grass therapy! MOL

As we love to upcycle, recycle and re-purpose items here at BBHQ, today's project can be made purretty much without having to buy anything in.

SO LET'S CRAFT ON

Are mew bored silly with horrendously dull and uninspiring pots to grow your cat grass in? Us too, so we decided to funk things up a bit, and this is what we came up with.

Crafting with Cats ©BionicBasil® Epically Funky Grass Pots

What We Used:

Plastic tubs

Jazzy paper

Laminator + pockets

Flower embellishments

Glue non-toxic

Scissors or craft knife**

>^.^<

**purrlease be super careful if mew're using a craft knife or cutting tool, take your time and always cut away from yourself, and we always recommend using cut-resistant gloves like this: Cut Resistant Gloves for Safety. These are just an example we found on Amazon and this is not an affiliate link.

*    *    *

Let's Begin

Crafting with Cats ©BionicBasil® How To Make Cute Pots For Your Cat Grass a

1. We recycled/repurrposed two plastic tubs, these were ideal, the P.A. said the chocolates were purretty nommable too! MOL  And the lids make purrfect plant pot trays/dishes too.

2. Next, we put some holes in the bottom - we used a bradawl tool, a small craft hammer and placed the tub bottom-down on a piece of flat wood to protect the table before punching the holes through.

3. This is our holographic jazzy paper, we chose pink and red.

4. & 5. Place jazzy paper in laminating pouches and laminate. This step isn't necessary but we found when watering the pots can get wet, and the laminated paper is more robust.

6. We measured the depth and circumference of the tub and cut laminated paper to size.

7. Glue the laminated paper to the tubs.

8. Get oodles of fun embellishments.

9. Decorate the tub.

And now we have some epically funky grass pots! MOL

Growing Some Nibbles

What We Used:

Organic compost

Gravel

Cat grass seeds

A sunny windowsill or warm location

Crafting with Cats ©BionicBasil® How To Make Cute Pots For Your Cat Grass a

1. Put some stones/gravel in the bottom, this will assist drainage, and the extra weight will help prevent the pot from tipping over during effervescent grass nomming sessions.

2. Add organic compost and fill to 2/3 full.

3. Sprinkle in cat grass seeds.

4. Top up with more compost. Don't fill it right to the top, leave space for watering.

5. Water and place in a warm spot. A sunny windowsill is ideal, mew can also cover with clingfilm to speed up germination. As it's the summer we just leave ours in the potting shed where it's nice and toasty.

6. Keep watering or spritzing with a spray bottle daily; a few days later, it should look like this.

7. The red pot was a little slower growing than the pink one, but it soon caught up.

8. Ready to NOM!

9. We use all kinds of little plastic tubs to grow cat grass in at BBHQ; small ice cream tubs, ready meal containers, yoghurt pots etc... just give them a good clean furst.

What's this got to do with Crafting For Your Shelters Day we hear mew ask?

Well, fluffy furiends mew could grow several little pots of cat grass to take to your local shelter, and we're sure the kitties there would love some fresh noms. And mew could use plain tubs or plastic pots, no need to decorate.

To see a more in-depth tutorial on growing cat grass, visit our Gardening with Cats post.

See what Melvyn and Fudge thought...

...or watch direct on YouTube.

We think that was a hit and such a stylish way to NOM your greens! MOL

And that furiends furry sadly brings us to the end of today's post, though we'll be back on the morrow with how to make a  Mini Cardboard Scratcher, so we do hope you can join us, until then...

Keep calm and craft on

**CRAFTING FOR YOUR SHELTERS DAY TWO** Crafting with Cats ~ How We made A Supurr Cute Catnip Snuggle Buddy

CRAFTING FOR YOUR SHELTERS DAY! @BionicBasil®

Welcome to day two of our mini craft-fest for

CRAFTING FOR YOUR SHELTERS

Our regular readers know how much we love to make stuff, and create something out of nothing, and if mew've missed any of our previous crafting posts, stop by the Crafting with Cats page to see everything we've made over the years.

Also, we love to upcycle, recycle and re-purpose items here at BBHQ, so most things can be made without having to buy anything in.

And if mew missed yesterday's post click here to see what we made.

LET'S CRAFT ON

The Snuggle Buddy for Shelter Pets
The Snuggle Buddy and Melvyn ©BionicBasil® Craft-Fest Day 2

We know there are lots of little kitties and K9's in shelters that are scared/lonely/needy
who would really benefit from this little snuggle toy, and you can see Melvyn loves it.

What you will need

Fabric*

Stuffing**

Catnip***

Sewing machine - needle and thread

Pins

Scissors

You can download** the PDF template from our google drive here or make your own template.

**Please see our Download policy**

>^.^<

*Fabric ~ we used felt squares that we had in stock, but any cotton fabric (other than jersey as that is too stretchy) will be fine. Use an old cotton shirt, bed sheet, anything like that will be fine.

**Stuffing ~ we used regular wadding as we also had that in stock, but we suggest for our larger K9 pals to stuff with old socks as it will make the Snuggle Buddy a bit more robust.

***Cats Only ~ Catnip is for the kitty side of the shelter only.

*    *    *
Use our A4 template above or make your own.
You can scale the pattern up for larger K9s.
Cut out 2 pieces, leaving approx 1/4" extra all the way around - see pic 1 below

1. & 2. Pin together [front and back view]

3. Sew together leaving the bottom of the legs open

4.  This is how your snuggle buddy should look
5. Start stuffing your snuggle buddy. Use a pencil or similar to poke to stuffing into the hard to reach places.

6.  Alternate stuffing with the wadding and catnip.
For our smaller K9 friends just use wadding.
And for bigger toys or K9s use old cotton socks or the like.

7.  Once stuffed to your liking, sew up the bottom of the legs.

8.  Your snuggle buddy should now look something like this.

Here's our finished Snuggle Buddy
He's called Pilkington!

We did hand-sew some small pom poms for eyes and buttons and added a little felt smile as this one is for demonstration purposes.  Though we would advise not to bother with that if you're taking yours to a shelter, just leave them plain. We will be making a few more to take to our local shelter without the pom poms. If you make one for home use and do add the pom poms, we suggest that you check the toy regularly just in case things come loose.

*    *    *

And that furiends furry sadly brings us to the end of our mini Craft-Fest. We do hope you've enjoyed it and feel inspired to make something, and we'd love to see how your projects turned out so feel free to post your pawesome crafty pics on our Facebook page at:

And if there's anything you'd like us to make, leave a comment with your idea/s.

Amber will be here tomorrow with a supurr special book review, so do stop by for that as she's got some epic to share!

**NATIONAL CRAFTS FOR YOUR SHELTERS WEEK** Craft-Fest with Cats ~ No Sew Catnip Crackers & Surprise Project ~ Day Five

Welcome to our week long craft-fest

NATIONAL CRAFTS FOR YOUR SHELTERS WEEK

Here's a quick re-cap just in case you missed Mondays post:

Everyday this week we'll be showing you how to make all kinds of stuff to take to your local shelter to give the kitties and K9's so they get to feel some love, and you get to flex your crafting skills. Any excuse to make something right? MOL

Now we know that some peeps don't sew and/or don't have access to a sewing machine or the like, so we will be incorporating some ideas that are completely NO SEW during the week, and don't think that the items are just for us cats, 3 of our items are for our K9 furriends too, so don't panic we've got you covered - of course we do, we're The B Team we've got everything covered!

Also we love to upcycle, recycle and re-purpose items here at BBHQ, so most things can be made without having to buy anything in.

Here's what we've got on offer throughout the week

As modelled by our youngest B Team memfur; Melvyn, and you can see he's absolutely blissed out.

1. Snuggle Buddy    2. Kicker Toy    3. Snuggle Mat

4. Mini Cardboard Scratcher    5. Catnip Cracker

SO LET'S CRAFT ON

Today we have another no sew project and our easiest craft project of the week which takes less than 10 minutes to make, so if you can cut a small square of fabric you can make this no problem.
Catnip Crackers and Melvyn - The B Team ©BionicBasil® Craft-Fest Day 5
What you will need

Fabric*

Stuffing**

Catnip***

String

Pins

Scissors

>^.^<

*Fabric ~ we used felt squares that we had in stock, but any cotton fabric including jersey or no fraying fleece will be fine. Use an old cotton shirt, bed sheet, t-shirts - test various types of fabric to see what works for you.

**Stuffing ~ we used regular wadding as we also had that in stock.

***Catnip is for the kitty side of the shelter only.

*    *    *

Lets Begin

How To make Catnip Cracker Toy - The B Team a ©BionicBasil® Craft-Fest Day 5
1.  Cut a small piece of fabric - ours are approx 7" x 6"

2.  Cut into the sides approx 1" to add that frayed effect and add catnip.

3.  Place a small amount of wadding on top of the nip - this helps to keep the catnip in place.

4. Roll up as tightly as you can and pin to hold together.  Next get your string and tie both the sides off, forming a small cracker.

And now you're done, and should have something that looks like the picture below - and yes, it really was that easy! MOL

Here's our finished Catnip Crackers

Catnip Crackers - The B Team ©BionicBasil® Craft-Fest Day 5
Obviously these are not suitable at all for our K9 Buddies.

Our top tip, when they start to come apart which they will after a few play sessions or less depending on how vigorous the kitty is, throw away and make more.  These are the simplest, easiest toy to make and the only cost would be the catnip, and if you grow your own, then they'd cost nothing.  How epic, epically so!

Super Dooper Easy Surprise Project

How To Grow Cat Grass

A high proportion of kitties that end up in shelters have usually come from the streets and are probably used to nibbling on a bit of grass for medicinal purposes as and when they like, so being put into a shelter with no access to any fresh greens is even more depressing, than it was already.  But we can make it a little better for them while they wait to get adopted.

So if you only have a few minutes spare, this could be the project for you.

Cat Grass at BBHQ ©BionicBasil® Craft-Fest Day 5
What you will need

 Cat grass seeds

Organic compost or soil

Small plastic containers*

Cling film

Sunny windowsill or outside space if its warm enough

>^.^<

*Containers - we used a ready meal container with a lid - the lid doubles as a tray.

plastic butter/margarine containers, small ice cream containers, yoghurt pots etc... will all be perfect for this project, just make sure they have a lid, and plus you get to re-purpose these items which is pawesome. [Obviously wash well before use.]

We've used our containers multiple times, they're still going strong after 6 months and we grow fresh pot or two of cat grass every week.

*    *    *

Lets Begin

How to Grow Cat Grass at BBHQ ©BionicBasil® Craft-Fest Day 5
1. Our ready meal container and lid - carefully put some drainage holes on the bottom before you begin.

2.  Put your organic compost about halfway up - top tip - use protective gloves when
 handling soil or compost.

3. Get your grass seeds ready - ours came from amazon, and this is a new variety we're trying.

4. Sprinkle seeds quite thickly over compost surface.

How to Grow Cat Grass at BBHQ b ©BionicBasil® Craft-Fest Day 5
5.  Cover the seeds fully with another layer of compost.

6.  Water well, until the soil is saturated.  At this point you can add the cling film to assist with germination if the temperatures are a little cooler.  Although it's been absolutely scorchio here the last few days so ours have been outside.  It takes about 3 to 4 days to sprout and we usually wait a week to ten days before we bring it inside - you'll know when its ready.  Don't forget to keep the compost moist if its warm/hot weather.

If you want more detailed growing instructions, visit our previous Gardening with Cats post.

And after approx 10 days you should have something that looks like this:

Now you may be wondering what the flashy red and pink pots to the right are..  well dearest friends they're our next Crafting with Cats post coming soon, we call them:- Happy Grass Pots - so do keep an eye out for that.
